If you’ve heard that adult teeth aren’t eligible for orthodontic treatment, then you “heard wrong.” An orthodontist takes into account many variables when planning a customized care plan, and age is seldom a deciding factor. Braces and invisible aligners can be as effective on adults as they are on kids.
The office of Northfield Orthodontics is proficient at diagnosing and treating orthodontic issues in people of all ages. We take as much time as you need to address your every concern and clearly explain your options in care. We keep all of our patients in good hands every step of the way.
At least 25 percent of orthodontic patients are adults. Whether you’re in grade school or eligible for Medicare, the same biological process moves teeth through bone. All natural teeth respond to physical pressure over time. Many alignment issues can be fixed as easily for adults as for youngsters. Treatment won’t damage a crown or veneer if the crown or veneer is healthy and sound.
How adult treatment is different
Mature people’s bone tissue is more mature and solid than kids’, so treatment may need a bit more time. Also, the condition of their teeth must be considered. Some of them may be missing, malformed or worn. As long as a dental implant is in its correct position, an orthodontist can move the surrounding teeth. For some adults’ treatment to be successful, the orthodontist may need to call in other specialists such as endodontists, periodontists and oral surgeons. Treatment lasts an average of 22 months. You’ll have to visit the orthodontist every six to eight weeks so he (or she) can monitor your progress and make any needed adjustments.
We know your schedule is busy, but wearing braces or invisible aligners is a small outlay of time that pays big payments in the form of enhanced dental health, easier dental hygiene, improved self-assurance, and more efficient biting and chewing.
